QECH History

Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) is situated in Blantyre city, the commercial capital of Malawi. The Hospital is the oldest and largest government-owned tertiary facility in terms of OPD attendance, hospital admissions, and number of specialist services.

Gogo Chatinkha Wing

In 1980, Gogo Chatinkha wing was constructed. This wing specializes in Maternal and Child Health Services, both in-patient and out-patient. provides tertiary services for the entire population of the Southern Malawi.

  • Diagnostic laboratory

    Diagnostic laboratory
    The laboratory provides Teaching and Diagnostic Services to patients referred from district hospitals of the southern region of Malawi. Its main functions include: Diagnostic, Preventive, Monitoring and Screening
  • Diagnostic Radiology

    Diagnostic Radiology

    Radiology is a busy department which attends to approximately 250-300 patients daily majority of whom are trauma patients. It deals with all forms of trauma case, emergency cases, obstetrics

    Oncology
    The Oncology department was established in 2010 by Dr Leo Masamba who had just come back from specializing in Clinical Oncology. At the time it was initiated, the Department was the only Cancer care facility in Malawi.
  • Ophthalmology (Eye)

    Ophthalmology (Eye)
    Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department is the main referral centre for eye conditions in Malawi. It also serves as an academic training centre for Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Mzuzu University and Malawi College of Health Sciences.

    The laboratory provides Teaching and Diagnostic Services to patients referred from district hospitals of the southern region of Malawi. Its main functions include: Diagnostic, Preventive, Monitoring and Screening

    SURGERY
    The surgery department of the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital is a multispecialty centre that offers surgical patient care along with training and research. The trainings offered in the department are; specialty training for surgery in various subspecialties
